The annual Best of Newton Photo Contest will be accepting entries now through October 21. The free contest gives photographers multiple opportunities to be recognized.
The contest will have two categories this year – the open category and one focusing on photos of people of Newton. The feature category can include photos of people doing activities, daily life, and all things that highlight life and fun in Newton.
Individuals may submit up to five entries in each category. Entries are accepted from Newton residents and visitors.
Photos will be considered for three different forms of recognition:
- The Best of Newton Photo Contest, in which photos will be judged for prizes. The top three in each category will receive Chamber Checks of $100 for first place, $75 for second, $50 for third. Any entries deemed worthy of honorable mention will receive $25.
- The Newton 2025 calendar, which will feature 12 images to reflect a year in Newton. Photos chosen for the calendar will be horizontal on 4:3 scale or cropped horizontally.
- A People’s Choice contest through the Choose Newton Facebook page, where Likes help select the most popular photos and the winners of $10 Chamber Checks gift certificates.
- The Best of Newton Photo Show, an exhibit that will open January 16, 2025 at Carriage Factory Art Gallery, 128 E. Sixth St.
Judges will choose winners in the Best of Newton photo contest based on the quality of the image, technical merit, creativity, subject matter as it relates to Newton, and the appeal of the image to potential visitors.
In addition to the open category, a second category will reward photographs that show the people of Newton having fun, in recreation, and doing daily life.
Photos will be chosen for the calendar with an eye toward the four seasons, the holidays, and annual events in Newton. Images chosen to appear in the calendar will end up with a landscape orientation.
Photographers whose images are selected for the show at Carriage Factory will be contacted about participating in the show. If they choose to participate, photographers will have to provide a framed image with a wire hanger on the back. Everything displayed in the show should be made available for sale with photographers setting the prices. Photographers will receive 70 percent of the sale price with the gallery receiving 30 percent.
Email entries must include photographer’s name, address, email, phone number, photo title and location where it was taken. Photographers must sign a release with each image granting the Newton Convention & Visitors Bureau with the right to use, publish, display or distribute the image.
